Vidya Balan gets into the skin of the character. Demands a smoking ban on the set because she's playing a pregnant woman. Vidya Balan, who is playing the role of a six-month pregnant woman in Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani, has invoked a no smoking ban on the film sets.

Vidya Balan has demanded a smoking ban around her as she is six months pregnant! The actress has told her director that there cannot be any smoking around her.

Director Sujoy Ghosh isn't complaining, in fact he is rather pleased.

"She's really into the character. So much so that after a while she started freaking us out. She started behaving like an expectant mother and wouldn't let anyone smoke in front of her.. and we were like.. huh? Pregnant!? Who? So I think for Balan once she is mentally there, physical bits are baaye haath ka khel," Ghosh told the tabloid.

Vidya Balan Is Exhausted?

Vidya Balan, who has been shooting outdoors on the streets of Delhi for "Who Killed -Jessica" from dawn till 10.30 p.m., is extremely exhausted.

"There's no time to do anything. By the time we wrap up, all I want to do is crash out for the day, " she said.

"Sadly, I haven't even been able to meet my sister who stays in Gurgaon (on the outskirts of Delhi). She's a wife, mother and a jobholder. By the time she comes from work it's too late for us to meet up, " the actress said.

However, Vidya is quick to point out that she loves Delhi.

"I love the wide open spaces, the broad streets and the crowded lanes. Rani (Mukerji) and I have been shooting outdoors. Since she's my favourite actress from the immediately-senior generation, I am happy to be sharing camera space with her, " she said.

Vidya Balan Couldn't Believe On Her Luck

Nanda along with best friend Waheeda Rehman made a rare appearance on Tuesday for a screening of Ravi Jadhav’s highly-acclaimed Marathi film Natarang at the Ketnav theatre in Pali Hill.

But on condition that no press or photographers were to be present. Apparently, the reclusive actress is now unrecognizable, having put on a lot of weight.

Vidya Balan who was present at the screening can’t believe her luck!

“Nanda ji was with Waheeda ji…can you imagine they’ve been friends for 45 years? When I went over to greet Waheeda ji she introduced me to Nanda ji. I just gawked.

When Nanda ji spoke it was that same melodious voice we used to hear in her films. She told me she was a Capricorn just like me. I was completely stunned by her graciousness.

Later I came to know Waheeda ji, Nanda ji, Shammi Aunty and Asha Parekh ji are a close circle of friends. Only Asha ji was missing at the screening that day. ”

This was Nanda’s first public appearance since she went into voluntary exile after the sudden and shocking death of her fiancé filmmaker Manmohan Desai in 1994.

She has been so much out of the public eye that it took Natarang’s leading man Atul Kulkarni some time to recognize the still-lovely actress.

Recalling the historic moment Atul said, “This beautiful lady came up to me after the screening and started talking to me in fluent Marathi.

It was Nanda ji. It was such a pleasant surprise to see her. She had come with Waheeda ji whom I had invited and urged to bring along Nanda ji also. ”

Atul came close to Waheeda Rahman during the shooting of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti and Delhi 6. Also present at the screening of Natarang on Tuesday were veteran actresses Helen and Shammi, along with Urmila Matondkar and Vidya Balan.

Says Atul, “It was a special evening with these very special ladies. But then Natarang is a special film about music and dance and perhaps that’s what attracted Waheeda ji and her friends. ”

Obsessive Vidya Can't Get Enough of Her Possession

Finally, Vidya Balan has made that move. Three weeks ago Vidya Balan finally moved into her new 4-bedroom place in Khar.

And she just can't get enough of her brand new possession. “It's virtually been built brick by brick by me in the middle of my busy schedules. I wasn't able to give the house time at a stretch. That's why it took time to be put together.”

Now the house-proud actress intends to have a house-warming party, her first get-together since she came into the film industry, and also a good time to celebrate since two of her back-to-back films have been declared hits.

But nothing about Vidya is convention. Not even her house-warming party.

Says the lovely actress, “I think it's imprudent to invite all your friends all at once for one party. This makes the gathering unmanageable, guests who don't know one another get uncomfortable.

So I'm having a series of sit-in dinners in my new house where groups of friends who know one another, can come together for cosy comfortable conversations and food.”

But first, Vidya wants every little detail in her new house to be perfect. “I'm fastidious about cleanliness to the point of being obsessive about my home. If I feel a drawer is messy I will clean it up at 3 in the morning after a hard day's shooting. So before my house-warming parties start I need to make sure everything is in place.”

Vidya admits the home is now her proudest possession. “Shifting into it after the release of Ishqiya is a conscious move. I think after Paa and Ishqiya I've earned myself a place of my own.”

Vidya earlier stayed in a much smaller place in Chembur. The new place has been done up by a friend of her father.

“Nobody that is familiar to the film fraternity. He had done up our earlier place as well.”

Vidya Balan Is Not Apologetic For Her Lust?

Vidya Balan is fascinated with the poetic wooing style of old-timer Naseeruddin Shah rather than wickedly funny guy Arshad Warsi in Vishal Bhardwaj's protégé Abhishek Chaubey's directorial debut 'Ishqiya'.

Talking about the difference in the approach of both her lovers in the movie, Vidya informs, “Arshad's character is a typical guy for whom love is the way to get sex and Naseer saab's character is more old school.”

She continues, “Krishna is not apologetic about her needs. She gets attracted to Arshad's character and there is a certain culmination to it. With Naseer saab she enjoys that attention. He woos her in a classical way.”

No wonder Vidya falls for Naseeruddin Shah when he woos her with 'Dil toh bachcha hai ji'.

Ask her how she would like to be wooed in real life she admits, “Fortunately or unfortunately I love the Naseer saab kind of romance, someone who woos with beautiful words and poetry. It's old school filmy style.

I don't mind when a man opens a door for me or pulls out the chair for me. That chivalry is there in his character though in a different way because it's a rural setting.”

Vidya Balan Felt So Sexy & Raunchy By Sucking Arshad's Thumb

Vidya Balan who never touches alcohol has shot a special risqué number entitled Ibn batuta in Ishqiya with her co-stars Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi.

Says Vidya, “We shot the song last month after the entire shooting was completed. I don’t drink and I had to act sozzled along with Naseer Saab and Arshad.”

The track will be used in the opening and credit titles of Ishqiya.

Says Vidya, “Arshad is a fab dancer. And Naseer Saab was having a ball dancing to the song Vishal Bhardwaj had composed. I think the last time he danced was for Oye oye in Tridev. But you can’t tell. He’s so good. Both the guys were having so much fun, and I had to join in pretending to be totally drunk.”

The song came out so well that the director Abhishek Choubey was thinking of using it in the narrative. But since it didn’t fit in, Ibn batuta will now just be part of the credit titles.

That isn’t the only daredevil thing Vidya has done in Ishqiya. This has to qualify as one of the most sensuous things a mainstream Hindi-film heroine is seen doing in any movie.

In what Vidya Balan describes as the most blatant come-hither gesture she has ever seen any actress in Hindi cinema make, in Ishqiya she was required to take Arshad Warsi’s thumb in her mouth and suck on it suggestively.

Each time she did so in the rehearsals Vidya would burst into uncontrollable giggles.And Arshad would join in.

Recalls Vidya, “Fortunately Arshad is a friend. We’ve gotten along well from the time we did Lage Raho Munnabhai together. I don’t know I’d have been able to do a scene like putting my co-star’s finger in the mouth with someone else. That gesture of sucking Arshad’s thumb was so raunchy and sexy, so not me, I couldn’t connect with it all.”

That sense of non-connectivity, says Vidya, runs through her character in Ishqiya. “I play this rustic voluptuous woman. All my weight-loss happened after I did this film. I had to looked filled up for this part.

In Ishqiya everything from the way I wore my saree to the way I looked at men, was alien to me. The role exposed me to a new way of interpreting a liberated woman. My character in Ishqiya may not know about feminism. But she’s truly liberated.”

Vidya is now looking forward to the release of Ishqiya in January. “The director Abhishek Choubey had to constantly keep giving me a pep talk. Quite often I was stuck because of the language and content.

Vidya Balan Need A Reason For Bold Scenes?

Debutant Bollywood director Abhishek Chaubey says that his film Ishqiya has turned out to be a bold movie because of the rural backdrop. He, however, adds that he isn't making any social statement with the film, which is a tale of romance, crime, suspense, passion and deceit.

"One of the reasons why it comes across as bold is because it has a north Indian rural setting. If I were to place my characters in downtown Mumbai, then it would have been a normal movie. The locale makes the film fresh and unique, " Chaubey told.

But Chaubey clarifies that "Ishqiya" is not a social comment, rather it's about the emotional journey of three people played by Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan.

"My backdrop, my setting, I have borrowed them from reality and I used them to tell the story. The film is about these three people, it is not a social comment. I'm not making any statement about society with my film. It's basically about the emotional journey of these three people, " said Chaubey.

Asked what inspired him to set his film in an interior area of Uttar Pradesh, he said: "There are many reasons. The most important is that I am from there. My parents are from there, I was born there and I spent some part of my life there. I know a little bit about the place, people, culture and the landscape. And I wanted to set a film in a territory where I am most comfortable."

"Ishqiya" could be described as a female-centric film because Vidya's character has an important role in the movie.

"The woman in my film happens to be a very important character. She has her own issues. She has her own needs, desire and goals. She is not just an emotional support to the hero of the film. The female character in the film drives the plot in critical places, " said Chaubey.

"The film is a blend of romance and suspense. It deals with various aspects of love, lust, complete submission and false love. It is not just about the three central characters; other characters in the film are also connected to it, " he added.

Chaubey admits that the film will reflect his personal experiences as well.

"It's very difficult for a director to make a film and not show himself. Definitely the film will have a reflection of me. You don't plan it, you don't think in that way, but the moment you start creating your characters, some of your personal experiences go into it.

"Things that you have experienced in your life that remain at the back of your consciousness pop up and help you in creating your film. Some part of my life has gone into the film. For instance, inputs for Vidya's character came from women I met in my life."

Chaubey says Vidya wasn't apprehensive about the bold scenes, but she had to be given reasons why it was required in the movie.

"She was not apprehensive to do bold scenes, but she needed proper reason why those scenes were required. It was well explained in the script and I was also clear in my mind why her character is like that. So I gave her the details. When she came on the set, she knew what she was doing and why she was doing it."

"Ishqiya" is slated for release Jan 29.

Vidya Balan Will Never Use Her Sexuality Tool?

Shed some light on your character in Ishqiya?
I play the role of a widow called Krishna. She may be an unconventional character but what I liked about the character is the fact that she is very believable. The role has gray shades. She is neither positive nor negative.

All that I can say is that Krishna is very humane. She is not apologetic about her needs. If she is like a chameleon in front of Arshad, for whom, love is a way to get sex, with Naseer she enjoys the way he woos her in a classical way.

How would you describe your character?
As women, we play a lot of roles in life and are not the same everywhere, whereas, with due respect to men, I feel that a man showcases similar characteristics everywhere. A woman is Kaali, Durga, Ramba as well as Saraswati. None of us is a doodh ki dulhi (pure) and we react as per the requirement or the demand of the relationship. Sometimes we are manipulative, sometimes we are scheming but we are not necessarily bad.

What attracted you to the film?
I was thrilled- I was thought of for the role. I was kicked by the fact that director Abhishek Chaubey who has been an assistant to Vishal Bhardwaj didn’t want to go in for a conventional cast and had the confidence in the first place that I could pull off Krishna’s character who gets involved with both men who belong to different age groups at the same time.

How did you prepare for your part in Ishqiya?
I do preparations for every role of mine but for this part, I needed to do more preparations. I shot for Ishqiya even before Paa. I knew I could do a role like that of Krishna, as an actor. Abhishek gave me the brief that, as a typical North Indian woman, I should look voluptuous for my part and hence I didn’t make any attempt to reduce my weight though I had put on a lot of weight at that time.

I could understand Abhishek’s vision as a director when I spent almost a month discussing not only the script with him every day but also talking about everything under the sun.

Did you go by any reference?
Krishna is the quintessential Indian woman. For an actor like me with a certain image, it was very nice to get a role like this which was new. I didn’t need to prepare in terms of reference for this part.

I only needed to understand what Krishna would do in various situations and I did a character building exercise. The thing is mostly women roles in Bollywood are not etched out well in most of the films and they are made either the vamp or the ever suffering Bharatiya nari.

Women are rarely portrayed as real characters. As an actor, it was for me an experiment and I could also discover a lot about myself as an actor. I feel much fulfilled now- the film is ready for release.

To what extent did you depend upon your director to give life to your part?
As an individual, I do have my own inputs for every character that I set out to perform, though I have always maintained that it is the vision of the director that counts ultimately. Vishal Bhardwaj has written the subject along with Abhishek Chaubey but Abhishek’s interpretation is quite different.

The biggest challenge for me was to do every scene with conviction even when there was a difference of opinion. Despite the fact that he is not only the writer and producer of the film, Vishal did not interfere with Abhishek Chaubey as far as direction was concerned because he had complete confidence in him.

Did you hesitate to take up the role because you had to mouth a lot of swear words and also indulge in a smooching scene with Arshad Warsi?
I sign any film only after I read the complete script. If I had not been convinced, I would not have been able to play the role at all. Though as Krishna, I had to portray a woman who is aggressive as far as the way she speaks and her body language was concerned, as Vidya Balan I still would desist from mouthing gaalis.

Kissing was integral to the script because the story goes ahead with that. Luckily in front of the camera, I could forget that I am Vidya Balan and make the transition to being the character that Krishna was.

Can you elucidate?
I was quite comfortable with the smooching scene because I knew Arshad well from the time we had acted in Lage Raho Munnabhai and he is a friend. It all depends upon with whom you are working.

People like Vishal Bhardwaj have a certain amount of credibility. I have done the kissing scene with honesty and am not ashamed of it at all, though I should say that as Indians we are very private about our display of affection.

In what way are you different from Krishna?
I would rather use my merit to get my way than use my sexuality but Krishna does not think twice before unabashedly using her sexuality as a tool to get whatever she wants from men.

Did you work a lot on the costumes for your role?
After Parineeta it was for Ishqiya that I had quite a few trials for my costumes. I had to pick out of the one thousand and odd saris that Abhishek Chaubey had chosen for me from various places in U.P, because, as he put it succinctly, clothes also tell the story in Ishqiya.

Which, according to you, are your five best films?
I’d name Parineeta, Bhool Bhulaiya, Paa, Lage Raho Munnabhai and now Ishqiya as my five best films, not necessarily in that order as far as merit is concerned. At the same time, I would not hesitate to state that Ishqiya is the most exciting role of my career till date.
